If you buy Korean skincare in India, the box or bottle may show several dates, Korean words and short codes. They do not all mean the same thing. The important distinction is between the product's use-by information, the period after opening and the manufacturing or batch number.
This guide explains how to read those markings without treating an unverified batch-code website as the final authority.
The quick answer
When checking a Korean cosmetic, look for these three labels:
- 사용기한: use-by or expiry information.
- 개봉 후 사용기간: period of use after opening.
- 제조번호: manufacturing or batch number.
South Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety lists the manufacturing number and either use-by information or the period after opening among cosmetic labelling information. Source: https://www.mfds.go.kr/wpge/m_645/de050601l0024.do
A batch number helps identify a production lot. It should not automatically be read as the expiry date.
Expiry date vs batch code
An expiry or use-by date tells you the date or period within which the manufacturer intends the product to be used under the stated conditions.
A batch code identifies a manufacturing lot. Brands can use it to trace production records, but the format is not universal. A short code such as `ABC123` should therefore not be converted into a date unless the brand itself explains how that code works.
For an Indian buyer, the practical rule is simple: if the pack already gives clear use-by information, rely on that rather than trying to reverse-engineer a batch code.
Korean words you may see
사용기한
This refers to use-by or expiry information. It is the line to check when deciding whether an unopened product is still within the period stated by the manufacturer.
개봉 후 사용기간
This means the period of use after opening. Some cosmetics may also show an open-jar PAO symbol such as 12M or 6M. In markets using the PAO symbol, 12M means 12 months after opening and 6M means 6 months after opening. The European cosmetics regulation defines the period-after-opening symbol in Annex VII. 제조번호
This is the manufacturing or batch number. It is mainly a traceability identifier and should not be confused with expiry information.
What if both an expiry date and a PAO period are shown?
Use both pieces of information.
For example, imagine a product shows a use-by date in 2028 and a 12M period after opening. If you open it in January 2027, the printed 2028 date does not automatically mean you should keep using the opened product until the end of that date range. The after-opening period still matters.
The safest interpretation is to follow the instructions printed by the manufacturer and stop using the product earlier if its condition changes.
Why storage matters in India
India's heat and humidity make storage worth taking seriously.
The U.S. FDA notes that heat, moisture, sunlight, air exposure and repeated contamination can affect cosmetic shelf life. Products can change in smell, colour, texture or stability over time. Source: https://www.fda.gov/cosmetics/cosmetics-labeling/shelf-life-and-expiration-dating-cosmetics
Useful habits include:
- Keep skincare away from direct sunlight.
- Do not leave products in a hot car.
- Close caps and lids properly.
- Avoid adding water to a product.
- Use clean hands or a clean spatula where appropriate.
- Avoid unusually hot or damp storage locations.
Refrigeration is not automatically better. Follow the brand's storage instructions rather than assuming every serum belongs in a refrigerator.
Can you use Korean skincare after the printed expiry date?
Do not assume an expired cosmetic is suitable simply because it still looks normal.
Shelf life depends on formulation, packaging, storage and use. The FDA describes shelf life as the period during which a cosmetic can be expected to look and act as intended and remain safe for use. Source: https://www.fda.gov/cosmetics/cosmetics-labeling/shelf-life-and-expiration-dating-cosmetics
If the product has passed the manufacturer's stated use-by period, replacing it is the more cautious option.
What if there is no obvious expiry date in English?
Check both the outer box and the product container. Look for:
- 사용기한
- 개봉 후 사용기간
- 제조번호
- A date next to Korean text
- An open-jar symbol such as 12M
- A market-specific sticker or importer label
If the date is still unclear, contact the brand or seller and send clear photographs of the package, bottom label and batch number.
Do not invent an expiry date from an unfamiliar code.
Are online batch-code checkers reliable?
Treat them as a secondary clue, not as the final authority.
Batch-code formats are controlled by manufacturers and can change. A third-party database may be incomplete or outdated. A better order is:
1. Read the printed use-by or after-opening information.
2. Check the brand's official information.
3. Ask the seller or importer where relevant.
4. Use third-party batch decoders only as an additional clue.
Does a valid batch code prove authenticity?
No. A batch code alone should not be treated as proof that a Korean skincare product is genuine.
Check the complete picture: seller identity, packaging, invoice, importer or market label where applicable, product details and whether the brand or seller can verify the item.

Signs that an opened product should be discarded early
A product can become unsuitable before its printed date if it has been contaminated or stored badly. Reassess it if you notice:
- A new or unpleasant smell
- Unexpected colour change
- Unusual separation
- Visible contamination
- Damaged packaging exposing the formula
- A major texture change
- An unexpected skin reaction
The FDA advises consumers to stop using a cosmetic if they experience an unexpected reaction and notes that changes such as bad smell, colour change or foreign material can indicate a problem. Source: https://www.fda.gov/cosmetics/resources-consumers-cosmetics/using-cosmetics-safely
If you develop significant swelling, burning, breathing difficulty or another serious reaction, seek appropriate medical care.
Should you record when you opened a product?
Yes, especially when the package gives a period-after-opening instruction.
Writing the opening month on a small label or recording it in your phone makes it much easier to track products such as serums, essences and creams. The FDA also suggests marking the date a cosmetic is opened to help track its age. Source: https://www.fda.gov/cosmetics/resources-consumers-cosmetics/using-cosmetics-safely
A simple five-step check before buying
1. Find the use-by information
Check the printed expiry or after-opening period.
2. Identify the batch number separately
Do not mistake a manufacturing code for the expiry date.
3. Check the seller
Prefer sellers that provide clear business details, invoices and transparent sourcing information.
4. Inspect the packaging
Check that the box, container and market-specific labels appear complete and consistent.
5. Keep proof of purchase
Save the invoice or order confirmation in case you later need help with authenticity, damage or expiry questions.
Frequently asked questions
Is the manufacture date the same as the expiry date?
No. A manufacturing date indicates when the product was made. An expiry or use-by date indicates the manufacturer's stated period for use. A batch number is a separate production identifier.
Does 12M mean 12 months after manufacturing?
No. On a period-after-opening marking, 12M refers to 12 months after opening.
Can every Korean cosmetic batch number be decoded online?
No universal public coding format covers every Korean cosmetic brand. When the pack is unclear, the brand is the better source for interpreting its own code.
Is unopened skincare always fine until the printed date?
Not necessarily. Storage conditions and package integrity still matter. Extreme heat, damage or contamination can affect a product before the printed date.
Should Korean skincare be refrigerated?
Only when the manufacturer recommends it or the product instructions support that storage method. Cool, dry storage away from excessive heat and sunlight is usually the safer default.
Bottom line
For Korean skincare, the printed use-by information and after-opening instructions matter more than unverified batch-code decoding.
Remember:
- 사용기한 = use-by or expiry information
- 개봉 후 사용기간 = period after opening
- 제조번호 = manufacturing or batch number
Check the manufacturer's instructions, store the product carefully, record when you open it and contact the brand when a code or date is unclear.
